Dr. Schauer completed his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, his surgical residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio, and fellowship training at Duke University. He is Professor of Metabolic Surgery Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and holder of the United Companies Life Insurance Co./ Mary Kay and Terrell Brown endowed Chair. He is the Director of Metamor Metabolic Institute in partnership with Pennington Biomedical Research Center and Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. He is formerly Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. He is past president of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). He is former Chair and founder of Obesity Week (2012-present) and Co-Chair of the Diabetes Surgery Summit (2007, 2015, 2019). Dr. Schauer's clinical interests include obesity, diabetes and metabolic surgery. He has performed more than 9,000 operations on 5 continents around the world for severe obesity and diabetes. His research interests include the pathophysiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes, and outcomes of metabolic surgery.
He has authored more than 500 scientific papers, 75 textbook chapters, and 4 textbooks related to obesity, bariatric/metabolic surgery and gastrointestinal surgery with more than 45,000 citations. He is principal investigator of the STAMPEDE trail published in New England Journal of Medicine (2012, 2014, 2017) with more than 6000 citations and numerous awards from American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, NIH and Wall Street Journal. He has been principal investigator on 3 NIH funded studies evaluating surgical treatment of diabetes and obesity. He has been a member of the editorial board of many scientific journals. He has been an invited speaker for more than 250 international lectures on the subject of metabolic surgery. He has trained more than 200 postgraduate surgeons and 100 fellows. He is the recipient of the SAGES Pioneer in Surgical Endoscopy Award 2018 and the Cleveland Clinic 2015 Sones Award – highest honor for scientific innovation at the Cleveland Clinic.
